The Destination: Etna

Welcome to the captivating wine destination of Etna, nestled along the eastern coast of Sicily, on the slopes of Mount Etna, Europe's highest and most active volcano. Its territory is characterized by dramatic landscapes, featuring ancient lava flows and picturesque villages. This wine region differentiates itself for its terraced vineyards that thrive in the rich, mineral-laden volcanic soil, resulting in elegant wines with distinctive flavors and remarkable minerality. The Mediterranean gentle climate, characterized by hot, dry summers and mild winters, combined with high altitudes, offers the ideal conditions for cultivating indigenous grape varieties such as Nerello Mascalese and Carricante.

Etna’s winemaking history dates back to ancient times, when the Greeks first introduced viticulture to the area, with significant developments occurring over the centuries. Nevertheless, the phylloxera pandemic and the two World Wars led to a decline in viticulture in the region. Many vineyards were abandoned and replaced by more profitable crops. It was not until the late 20th century that a renewed interest in quality wines resulted in a new era of Etna viticulture. A few passionate winemakers decided to bet on Etna's old vineyards, but invest in new winemaking techniques, to be able to innovate while respecting tradition and terroir at the same time.

Did you know? Phylloxera is a small, aphid-like insect that devastates grapevines by feeding on their roots, leading ulitimately to the vine's decline and death. The Phylloxera epidemic that spread across Europe in the late 19th century, which devastated vineyards across Europe, also shaped the region's winemaking practices. Etna's vineyards, however, were relatively unaffected due to the protective properties of the volcanic soil, allowing many old vines to survive and continue producing high-quality grapes.

Etna is home to some of the oldest cultivated vineyards in Italy, (even older than a hundred years old!) and still planted with free-standing, ungrafted vines.

An important milestone came in 1968 with the establishment of the Etna DOC appellation (Denominazione di Origine Controllata), recognizing the unique qualities of the region's wines and ensuring high production standards. Today, Etna's wine culture is celebrated for blending traditional practices with modern winemaking techniques, making it a must-visit destination for wine lovers looking for exceptional wines and a rich heritage.

Wine & Food in the Etna territory

Discover Etna's volcanic wines

Exploring the wineries of the Etna region offers a delightful journey into some of Italy’s most unique wines. As mentioned already above, the wines from this area benefit from the rich, volcanic soils and the distinctive climate that is found on the slopes of Mount Etna.

The Etna DOC disciplinary (Denominazione di Origine Controllata), established in 1968, protects the wines produced in this specific volcanic terroir.

Within the Etna DOC, three main wine types are produced: Etna Rosso, Etna Bianco, and Etna Rosato.

  • Etna Rosso, meaning red, is predominantly made from local Nerello Mascalese grapes, often blended with Nerello Cappuccio. This red wine is celebrated for its elegance, vibrant acidity, and flavors of red fruits, spices, and minerals, reflecting the volcanic soil. Riserva wines are aged for at least four years, offering greater complexity and depth, often showcasing rich, developed flavors that highlight the aging potential of Etna's wines.

  • Etna Bianco (white), is primarily produced from Carricante grapes, occasionally blended with Catarratto, and offers a refreshing and crisp taste with citrus, floral, and mineral notes. It’s perfect for those who enjoy a bright and zesty white wine. Etna Bianco Superiore is a special designation for white wines made from at least 80% Carricante grapes and produced exclusively in the Milo area.

  • Etna Rosato is a rosé wine made from Nerello Mascalese, at times blended with Nerello Cappuccio, offering a delicate balance of red fruit flavors and a hint of minerality, making it an excellent choice for warm summer days.

  • Etna Spumante refers to Etna's sparkling wines - white or rosé - made using the traditional method, which includes a secondary fermentation in the bottle, providing vibrant acidity and fine bubbles.

These types highlight the diverse and rich winemaking tradition of the Etna region, a must-visit for wine enthusiasts looking to explore unique volcanic wines with deep historical roots.

Looking at the different sub-areas, the Etna wine region is divided into four main Versanti (slopes) - each with its unique terroir that influences the characteristics of the wines produced there. Here's a closer look at each:

  • North: The northern slope of Mount Etna, covering from Randazzo to Linguaglossa, features cooler temperatures due to its higher altitudes and northern winds. The volcanic ash, sand, and lava stone soils result in wines with structure, elegance, and complexity, especially robust and acidic reds.

  • East: Stretching from Linguaglossa to Giarre, the eastern slope benefits from more moderate temperatures and a mix of sun and shade. Rich in volcanic ash and basalt, this area is great for producing white wines, particularly from the Carricante grape, known for its bright acidity and fresh fruit flavors.

  • South-East: The southeastern slope, covering from Zafferana Etnea to Santa Venerina, receives ample sunlight, and its soil is composed of volcanic ash and rocky lava. Wines from this subarea are balanced with ripe fruit flavors and a full-bodied character, making it ideal for producing both reds and whites.

  • South-West: Covering areas like Biancavilla and Adrano, the southwestern slope is the warmest and driest. Its volcanic soil mixed with clay produces robust, fruit-forward wines with intense flavors and higher alcohol content, making it suitable for powerful red wines.

These distinct terroirs across Mount Etna's slopes contribute to the region's diversity and complexity, each slope imparting unique characteristics influenced by its specific soil composition and microclimate.

Traditional cuisine around Etna

The Etna region offers a rich culinary heritage, rooted in Sicilian traditions, with dishes that reflect its volcanic terroir and local ingredients, grown in the gentle Mediterranean climate. The cuisine is heavily based on fresh produce such as eggplants, tomatoes, peppers, and zucchini, which are the stars of many local dishes. Fresh seafood, including sardines, clams, mussels, and squid, is also abundant due to the region's proximity to the coast. Pistachios from Bronte, known as "green gold," are famous across the globe and used in both savory and sweet dishes. Moreover, locally produced Etna DOP olive oil is a staple in Etna's cooking, adding depth and flavor to various dishes.

During your time in the Etna territory, we recommend trying:
