The Destination: FRANCIACORTA

Franciacorta is located in the Lombardy region of Northern Italy, specifically between the cities of Brescia and Bergamo. This famous wine region is characterized by its lush and elegant vineyards, and proximity to Lake Iseo, which plays an important role for its microclimate. The area enjoys a temperate climate with warm summers and mild winters, ideal for grape cultivation.

Today, Franciacorta is renowned for its premium sparkling wines, produced using the traditional method (Metodo Classico) which is similar to Champagne. The region's commitment to quality and innovation has made it one of Italy's most prestigious wine destinations!

Did you know? WHY IT'S CALLED FRANCIACORTA

The connection between Franciacorta and France is definitely a well-established one, as Franciacorta wine makers took inspiration from Champagne in order to produce the Franciacorta classic method. But what does the term France have to do with the name Franciacorta?. According to one etymological interpretation, everything; according to another, nothing. Some historians and scholars of the past have linked the name of the area to a brief stopover by French troops in the 13th century, but this theory has always been considered too weak.

Indeed, it's more plausible to follow the etymological line that links the name to the Latin expression "curtes francae," meaning courts exempt from paying duties for the transport of goods. These courts referred to small Benedictine monastic communities that settled here during the medieval era.

This etymology is also reflected in the name of one of the towns in the area, "Corte Franca," which evocatively recalls the commercial spirit that has brought prosperity to the region.

Wine & Food in Franciacorta

A lively (and sparkling) lombard wine!

This lively Lombard wine comes from a territory with a long-standing tradition of quality wine production, dating back to the Middle Ages, as historical evidence confirms. The name Franciacorta first appeared in 1277, referring to the "curtes francae," but vineyards existed even earlier.

The modern history of Franciacorta began in 1961 with 11 producers, 29 hectares of vineyards, and a production of 2000 hectoliters of Pinot di Franciacorta. That year, the first wine to bear the name Franciacorta was released from Guido Berlucchi's cellar. Just a few years later, in 1967, Franciacorta was recognized as a Denomination of Controlled Origin (DOC) zone.

Franciacorta DOCG sparkling wine typically features a fine, persistent perlage and offers great complexity and structure. Its color ranges from straw yellow to brilliant golden. Grape varieties used for producing Franciacorta are primarily Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco (up to 50%), and Pinot Nero and a maximum of 10% of Erbamat

What is Metodo Classico?

Franciacorta is made using the Metodo Classico, which distinguishes it from other sparkling wines produced with the Charmat method.

The main difference lies in the so-called second fermentation processSecond fermentation is a crucial process in making sparkling wine. Indeed, after the initial fermentation that turns grape juice into still wine, a combination of sugar and yeast (called liqueur de tirage) is added to the wine, which is then put in a bottle. This naturally generates a second fermentation. As the yeast consumes the sugar, bubbles are created and this characterizes sparkling wine.
In Metodo Classico, the second fermentation occurs inside the bottle, while the Charmat method conducts the second fermentation in large stainless steel tanks, creating larger bubbles.
The meticulous, time-intensive bottle fermentation of Metodo Classico is what gives Franciacorta its unique style and elegance.

When choosing a Franciacorta during a wine tasting, it's helpful to understand the different types based on their sugar content, which affects sweetness and flavor. Their characteristics depend on the quantities of the so-called "liqueur d'expedition".

  • Pas Dosé is the driest, offering a pure, crisp taste.

  • Extra Brut is still very dry but slightly more rounded.

  • Brut guaranteed a good balance with a touch of sweetness..

  • Extra Dry has a sweeter profile.

  • Sec or Dry is definitely sweet and fruity.

  • Demi Sec is the sweetest

Remuage

During remuage, bottles are gradually tilted and rotated to collect the sediment (lees) into the neck of the bottle. This process ensures that the wine remains clear and free of sediment before disgorgement, where the sediment plug is removed.

Disgorgement

It involves removing the sediment (lees) that has collected in the neck of the bottle during the aging process. The bottle's neck is frozen, the sediment plug is expelled under pressure when the bottle is opened, ensuring the wine is clear and free of sediment.

Liqueur d'expédition

A combination of wine and sugar added to sparkling wine after disgorgement.

This step adjusts the wine's sweetness level and completes the production process. It plays a crucial role in defining the final flavor profile of the wine.

In other presentations (Chianti Classico or Montalcino, for example) we discussed about the different products that pair perfectly with those specific wines. In this Franciacorta we'll try to change this a little bit, starting from the different types of Franciacorta that may be paired differently.

Let's start from the different types of Franciacorta:

Franciacorta: The most common type, it features a balanced flavor profile with fine, persistent bubbles. It's versatile. There are various types of Franciacorta (see above), whose characteristics depend on the quantities of liqueur d’ expédition added during disgorging, go with a wide range of dishes.

Franciacorta Satèn: Exclusively made from white grapes (Chardonnay and Pinot Bianco), this wine has softer bubbles and a creamy texture. It's perfect with delicate dishes like seafood, risotto, and soft cheeses.

Franciacorta Rosé: Made with a higher proportion of Pinot Noir, It is often paired  with cured meats or also grilled fish, not to forget spicy dishes.

Franciacorta Millesimato: Produced from a single vintage year, it has complex flavors as it has to for at least 30 months. This product pairs well with rich dishes like roasted meats and aged cheeses.

Franciacorta Riserva: Last but not least, the Riserva is aged for at least 60 months, guaranteeing  deep complexity and rich flavors. Best enjoyed with sophisticated dishes such as truffle-based recipes.
