The Destination: Trento DOC

The name Trentino conjures images and ideas of mountainous landscapes, tourist resorts, lakes, castles, and cliffs. However, it's essential to remember that this region has a long-standing agricultural heritage that continues to shape its landscape, creating a unique blend of natural and man-made elements.

Imagine yourself leaving the area of Verona and heading north; you'll drive passing by the Lake Garda on the left and the Adige river on the right. During your journey you'll understand you are in Trentino from the incredible change in the scenery and landscape around you. You'll always have the Adige River close to you, but you'll be surrounded by valleys and peaks, admiring beautiful terraced vineyards planted with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and other grape varieties together with many apple orchards.

In such a rich and varied region, three key zones correspond to the areas where Trentodoc vineyards are cultivated: the western zone, known as the Valle dei Laghi, which includes numerous bodies of water, including the northern part of Lake Garda; the central zone, featuring the Vallagarina and the Piana Rotaliana, which follow one another from south to north along the course of the Adige River; and the eastern zone, comprising the Valsugana and, to its north, the increasingly steep Val di Cembra.

The hub of this whole territory is the historic and surprising city of Trento, from where the Trentodoc gets its name.

Did you know? Trento DOC's Unique High-Altitude Vineyards

The Trento DOC wine destination features high-altitude vineyards between 656 and 2,600 feet above sea level in the Dolomite mountains. This unique setting, with its cool mountain climate and dramatic temperature variations, preserves the natural acidity of the grapes, contributing to the freshness and complexity of Trento DOC spumante. The steep, terraced vineyards require meticulous, often manual care, showcasing the dedication and craftsmanship of the region's winemakers. This exceptional environment and traditional production process give Trento DOC wines their renowned character and quality.

How To Reach Trento DOC wine destination

When planning your sparkling adventure to Trentino to savor the Trento DOC, consider these two main travel routes and methods to enhance your journey.

Northern Italy Road Trip

Exploring Trentino is best done by car, allowing you the freedom to navigate this picturesque but somewhat isolated region.

If you're traveling from northern cities like Venice, Verona or even Milan or Brescia (from the western side of Italy), a drive through Trentino can be a delightful part of your journey. This route allows you to immerse yourself in the rich cultural and wine heritage of Trentino while enjoying the scenic beauty of the Italian Alps

Gateway to Italy: A Grand Tour of Europe

For a more comprehensive Southern European tour, you can consider incorporating Trentino as your gateway to Italy. After visiting Switzerland, Germany, or Austria, drive south into Trentino, where the region's stunning natural beauty and rich wine heritage provide a perfect transition from the northern European world to the southern countries. This route offers a seamless blend of cultures and landscapes, allowing you to experience the best of both worlds. Trentino's strategic location makes it an ideal stop before continuing your travels to major Italian cities or further into the Mediterranean. Enjoy the breathtaking views, explore the charming towns, and indulge in the region's renowned Trento DOC wines as you make your way into the heart of Italy. Additionally, Trentino is well-connected by train, making it accessible from Austria and southern Germany, which provides a convenient and scenic travel option for those coming from these regions.

Whether you're embarking on a northern Italy road trip or incorporating Trentino into a grand tour of Europe, these routes will guide you to seamlessly enjoy the region. Delight in the stunning landscapes, world-renowned sparkling wines, and rich historical tapestry that this enchanting destination offers.

Flights

The nearest airport to Trentino and the city of Trento is Verona Villafranca Airport (VRN), located approximately 90 km (around 56 miles) from the heart of the Trentino region. You may also consider Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE), which is about 150 km (93 miles) away. This airport offers a greater number of international flights and connections. Additionally, Treviso Airport (TSF) is approximately 160 km (99 miles) from Trentino.

Milan Bergamo Airport (BGY) is another option, situated about 200 km (124 miles) from Trentino. Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) is farther away, at about 280 km (174 miles), but it is a major international hub with a wide range of flight options from various global destinations. While there are good train connections from Milan to Trentino, the trip can be quite long, so planning accordingly is recommended.

For those traveling from Germany, Munich Airport (MUC) is a viable option. It is advisable to spend a day in Munich before heading to Trentino, as the trip can be quite long.

Consider private transfers or car rentals from the airport for a more comfortable and convenient journey, especially after long flights. These services can enhance your travel experience and ensure a seamless transition to the scenic Trentino region.

Start your journey in the city of Trento, which serves as a great hub for exploring the surrounding vineyards. The city itself has numerous cycling paths and is well-connected to nearby wine areas. The cycling path from Trento to Mezzocorona follows the Adige River and provides a scenic and relatively easy ride. San Michele all'Adige is home to the Edmund Mach Foundation, which includes a renowned enology school and experimental vineyards. It is accessible by bike from Trento

For more adventurous cyclists, the Cembra Valley offers stunning landscapes and vineyards terraced on steep slopes. The ride from Trento to Cembra can be challenging due to the elevation changes, but the views and wine-tasting opportunities are well worth the effort. In case you want to visit Cembra Valley by bike, make sure you are in good shape or opt for a car ride.

Located to the north of Trento, right before South Tyrol, Roverè della Luna is known for its high-quality sparkling wines. The cycling route from Trento to Roverè della Luna is mainly flat, following the Adige River, and is suitable for cyclists of all levels.

Exploring Vallagarina is another excellent option. This southern part of the Trentino region is part of the Trento DOC production area and offers beautiful cycling routes. Trento DOC: Wine & Food

The Sparkling wine from the mountains

Few regions in the world can produce sparkling wines with such elegance and charm, and Trento DOC stands proudly among them. This prestigious sparkling wine hails from the Trentino region in northern Italy, nestled between the Alpine peaks and the Mediterranean influences of Lake Garda, the largest Italian lake.

Trento DOC is crafted using the Metodo Classico, a traditional method of secondary fermentation in the bottle, similar to Champagne. This method imparts a delicate effervescence and complex flavor profile that defines the wine's elegance. The primary grape varieties used in Trento DOC are ChardonnayPinot NoirPinot Meunier, and Pinot Blanc, all of which thrive in the varied climate and high-altitude vineyards of Trentino. The vineyards for Trento DOC are situated at altitudes ranging from 200 to 900 meters (656 to 2953 feet), benefiting from the cool mountain air and rich, mineral-laden soils. This diverse terroir contributes to the wine's unique characteristics, producing a sparkling wine that is both fresh and complex.

The production process of Trento DOC requires a minimum aging period of 15 months on the lees for non-vintage wines, 24 months for vintage (Millesimato) wines, and at least 36 months for Riserva wines. This prolonged contact with the lees adds depth and complexity to the wine, resulting in a rich bouquet and a smooth, elegant flavor.

Trento DOC wines come in several styles, primarily differentiated by their sweetness levels:

  1. Brut: With less than 12 grams of sugar per liter, Brut is crisp and dry, featuring notes of green apple and citrus

  2. Extra Brut: Even drier than Brut, with up to 6 grams of sugar per liter, offering a sharp and refreshing taste

  3. Dosaggio Zero (Zero Dosage): Contains no added sugar, highlighting the purest expression of the terroir and grape character

The history of sparkling wine in Trentino dates back to the early 20th century when Giulio Ferrari pioneered the production of Metodo Classico sparkling wines in the region, with 250 bottles of Trento DOC produced in 1902. Ferrari, an enologist from the San Michele Agrarian Institute, recognized the potential of Trentino's climate and terrain to produce high-quality sparkling wines comparable to the best French Champagnes. In 1902, he introduced Chardonnay grapes to the region and began producing small quantities of sparkling wine with meticulous attention to quality. His efforts laid the foundation for what would become the Trento DOC appellation.

Whether you are new to sparkling wines or a seasoned connoisseur, a journey through Trentino to explore Trento DOC wineries promises an unforgettable experience. Enjoy the breathtaking mountain scenery, visit the historic cellars, and savor the exquisite wines that truly represent the sparkling jewel of the Dolomites.

To best enjoy Trento DOC, it's recommended to use the "Tulipano" glass, which enhances the wine's aromas and effervescence. Alternatively, flute or white wine glasses can be used. It is common to see Trento DOC served in a tulip-shaped glass, which differs slightly from the usual spumante glass. This tulip-shaped glass features a V-shaped base that widens in the middle and narrows at the top, enhancing the aromatic experience.

The ideal serving temperature is between 6 and 8 degrees Celsius, and glasses should be thoroughly cleaned to avoid compromising taste and bubbles. Pouring slowly along the side of the glass helps preserve the wine's delicate bubbles.

Did you know? Trento DOC's Unique Underwater Aging Process

A winery in the South of Trentino submerges bottles of Trento DOC sparkling wine 40 meters deep in Lake Garda for aging. This method, used for over 1,200 bottles, takes advantage of the lake's constant temperatures, absence of natural light, and gentle currents. The result is a slower, more refined maturation. This innovative experiment, named Brezza Riserva, offers a distinct tasting experience compared to traditionally cellar-aged Trentodoc wines.

Food in the Trento Doc area

Canederli

Traditional bread dumplings often made with meat, cheese, or wild herbs. They are typically served in a rich broth. The crisp acidity and fine bubbles of Trento DOC sparkling wine enhance the rich, savory flavors of canederli, balancing their hearty texture.

Speck

Type of cured and smoked ham that is a staple in Trentino cuisine. It is typically thinly sliced and can be enjoyed as part of a charcuterie board. The effervescence of Trento DOC cleanses the palate after each bite making for a refreshing and harmonious combination.

South-Tyrolean Spätzle

Small, green dumplings made with spinach, often served in a creamy sauce with speck. This dish reflects the region’s mix of Italian and Germanic culinary traditions. Trento DOC’s complexity and fine bubbles complement the creamy texture and savory flavors, adding a touch of elegance to the meal
